How to Get In and Out of a Kayak [Video]

Our friends at Aquabatics put together this short video demonstrating how to enter and exit a kayak easily.

More than one person has taken a dunking on their first attempt! Though it’s a bit awkward at first, a dunking isn’t necessary if you follow these simple steps. With a little practice you’ll be stepping in and out easily.

Get In Your Kayak

How to Get In and Out of a Kayak

1. Set your kayak in the water parallel to the shore.

2. Set your paddle perpendicular to the kayak, behind the cockpit.
3. Grab the paddle shaft and the back of the cockpit with one hand as an anchor point. This will give you stability.
4. Place your other hand on the opposite end of the paddle shaft. This will force you into a low position with your knees bent, which is what you want.

5. Sit on the top of your kayak, while holding the paddle shaft, and swing one leg into the kayak on the opposite side.
6. While still holding to the paddle shaft, bring your other leg into the kayak and sit down on the seat.

To exit the kayak, just reverse the steps:

1. Bring your kayak parallel to the shore.
2. Set your paddle perpendicular to the kayak, behind the cockpit.
3. Place yours hands on the paddle shaft for stability.
4. Swing your body out of the cockpit while holding the paddle shaft. Use the kayak as a seat while you step into the water.

The above video will show you the complete process. Try it a few times and pretty soon you’ll be getting in and out like a pro.
