Extreme Kayak Fishing
With the blow up of kayak fishing and the evergrowing improvements to kayaks and kayak fishing gear it was only a matter of time before someone had the bright idea to launch through the surf and chase the bluewater monsters that have always been out of reach of the land based angler.
Now offshore kayak fishing is not a new thing, but for the longest time it has had only a small core group of East Coast Florida anglers batting the Atlantic in search of dolphin, wahoo, kings and sailfish. All that changed with Joe Hector and the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament Series where offshore kayak fishing has been blasted into the mainstream with insane catches and huge cash payouts.
My first Experiance offshore was with the 1st Extreme Tournament. I went out with absolutely no idea what I was doing or the talented anglers that I was up against. I caught nothing that day and from previous tournament experience I thought that maybe that was the case for everyone else. Well it definitely wasn't. The weigh in stage that day was filled up with blackfin tuna, mutton snappers and a 28lb kingfish. Even though I hadn't caught anything that day I was immediately hooked on the idea of going out and catching a monster.
Before the last tournament that Joe and his partner Doug Perez, (Flats Broke) on the forum, put on they were gracious enough to take Bonitabob and I out to show us the ropes. Right away fish were being caught now that I had somewhat of an idea of what I was supposed to be doing. Cobia, tuna, almaco jacks and bonita, all great pulling fish made me think that we had a successful day on the water. Then there was the last tournament where everything that swims in the ocean was caught, dolphin, tuna, jacks, grouper, sailfish, kings and a monster 39lb king!!
With Hobie Kayaks, huge cash payouts and an unbeatable weigh-in/beach party this is one event that you need to make. Fishing the blue waters of South Florida, catching the most popular gamefish in the world then paddling back to gorgeous white sandy beaches for music, fun and prizes. This tournament is turning more and more into an excuse for a vacation rather than a fishing tournament. It's definitely a must attend for this upcoming May. Be sure to check them out at www.extremekayakfishing.com
