ProStaffer of the Month: Adam Constantine
Adam Constantine is husband to Lorilee, father of four children, full-time firefighter and diehard kayak surfer. His favorite “playground” is the Bay of Fundy in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Adam’s Introduction to Kayak Surfing
Adam has canoed and paddled recreational kayaks all his life. When his mother passed away a few years ago, he needed an outlet for his grief. His close friend, Peter Lavigne (also an Aqua-Bound ProStaffer), introduced him to sea kayaking.
Together they discovered sea kayak surfing—and he’s been hooked ever since!
(If you haven’t heard of kayak surfing—it’s paddling a sea kayaking in ocean waves and surfing them into shore. Read: How to Kayak in Ocean Surf)
Adam’s Life on the Water
Adam loves kayak surfing because it can be anything to anyone. Playing in the “whitewater of the ocean” gets him into nature, is adventurous, provides solitude when he needs it, and has helped him find peace.
After a 24-hour shift at work, he’s ready to get to the Bay of Fundy for a few hours of playing. And because the Bay is salt water and doesn’t freeze up during the winter, Adam and Peter are year-round paddlers.
Adam was excited to bring his 10-year son to his first pool session recently. After learning to wet exit, self-rescue and other kayaking skills, his son smiled from ear-to-ear all the way home—a wonderful sight for his dad!
River Bay Adventures and Paying It Forward
Adam is a guide for River Bay Adventures of New Brunswick. He takes kayakers on the Atlantic/Bay of Fundy coastline there and on inland waters in southern NB. Their season runs from May through late summer or early fall.
He’s also been involved in the West Isles Sea Kayak Symposium any way he can. The Symposium has drawn kayakers from beginners to experienced paddlers, and grown in size over the years as more people want to check out sea kayaking.
He’s working on his Paddle Canada coaching certification, too, so he can help more people discover and learn about his favorite activity.
“Come to the Bay of Fundy”
Adam wanted to stress how wonderful the Bay of Fundy and his native New Brunswick are: “It’s not just a drive-through province, but a drive-to province. Come and experience it for yourself!”
The Bay has the highest tidal exchange in the world, which is partly what makes it so ideal for playing in the surf with a sea kayak. Beyond that, though, is its rugged beauty, mile upon mile of coastal paddling, and charming and friendly local communities.
Adam and Aqua-Bound
Adam is thrilled and honored to be part of Aqua-Bound’s ProStaff team. He uses the Shred Carbon and the Whiskey Carbon—“It’s [the Whiskey] a great paddle! I’ve put it through the ringer and it’s performed very well for me.”
